A Walk Among the Gargoyles
Doylestown’s Aldie Mansion is the kind of place that will have you looking up, down and all around.
This English Tudor manor, built in 1927 as the private residence of William and Martha Mercer, is a classic example of American craftsmanship as an art form. That art is all around in the shape of gargoyles, intricate brickwork, antique tiles and charming garden ornaments, all beautifully preserved. You can see it yourself during an evening tour open to the public on the first and second Thursday of the month. While you’re there, listen for the ghostly voices of visitors past, including Groucho Marx, the Von Trapp family and other celebrities of the day who often visited the Mercer family.
